Magnify.net

Just added a widget from Magnify.net to the sidebar. Many options possible.

Magnify.net is a new video startup that is different from the rest of the crowd. Unlike YouTube and dozens of others, it isn’t focused on building a portal around user-uploaded videos. Instead, they are allowing website publishers to create their own video channels, and populate it with videos from other sites (like YouTube, Revver, Yahoo Videos, etc.) that allow embedding.

Dvorak Hits Magical Crack Pipe, Says Apple Should Pull iPhone

Dvorak Hits Magical Crack Pipe, Says Apple Should Pull iPhone

That John C. Dvorak is up to it again. Making radical claims year after year until one of them actually hits and then he claims credit - real classy. Dvorak’s latest claim is that Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone before it’s too late. He goes on to say that Apple is merely an advertising company and the iPhone is way over-hyped. Says the silly goose:

What Apple risks here is its reputation as a hot company that can do no wrong. If it’s smart it will call the iPhone a “reference design” and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else’s marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures.

So if the iPhone fails, Apple is no longer a hot company? Dream on old man, dream on. However I will give props to Dvorak for what he said about this year’s CES. Read the full article only if you can handle the Apple-bashing, ’cause there’s a plenty.

8 Cool New Touchscreens

8 Cool New Touchscreens

A recent article on CNN Money.com highlights 8 new products that feature touchscreen technology. Is the Apple iPhone on the list? Of course it is. Touchscreens seem to be the next big thing (that was already out there) in the gadget and computer industry. Is it possible that Apple has brought this technology to the forefront similarly to how the iPod brought MP3 to the masses? It will be very interesting to see what types of new products will crop up when this touchscreen revolution comes about. Screen cleaners, screen protectors, and anti-fingerprint products will surely lead the pack.[Via CNNMoney.com]

Mac OS X Leopard pushed back for Vista support?

Mac OS X Leopard pushed back for Vista support?

Given that the last Leopard rumor we heard was that it'd actually be shipping early (like, this month), we're not sure how much stock should be put in this latest one, but according to DigiTimes, the word from "industry sources" is that the OS has now been postponed, all the way 'till October. Supposedly, the delay is necessary in order to add support for Vista to the integrated version of Boot Camp, which those same sources say Apple wants so it can increase its chances of grabbing more of that coveted PC market share. While we can't say if that's true or not, we are fairly confident that this won't be the last Leopard rumor we hear before its release, whenever that may be.

The Wall Street Journal Reviews Apple TV, Cautions Power Users To Not Get Too Excited

The Wall Street Journal Reviews Apple TV, Cautions Power Users To Not Get Too Excited

The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg scored the first review of the Apple TV wireless media streaming device and the big conclusion is that it “work[s] great…” for the average person. In other words, power users may feel that the Apple TV is a little too limited to appeal to them. As a power user, this news saddens me.

First, though, the good. The Apple TV was simple to set up and easily interacted with all six of the computers (three PCs and three Macs) Mossberg hooked up to his wireless network. Even though Mossberg is only rocking an 802.11g wireless network (Apple TV supports draft 802.11n), video streaming worked flawlessly. Well, flawlessly to a point, since Apple TV requires a TV with component or HDMI inputs. Essentially, what it does, it does well. Then again, it really doesn’t do all that much.

US University Dumps Windows to go All Mac

US University Dumps Windows to go All Mac

MacKeyser passed us a link to a MacWorld article about a University doing things a little differently. Instead of sticking with their inefficient mix of Apple and PC systems, the college is doing a 'total technology refresh', and adopting an all-Mac policy on the campus. Previously, a class at Wilkes University would be outfitted with something like 20 Macs and 20 PCs, to allow for individual preferences in software and OS use. With Boot Camp students at the Pennsylvania liberal arts college will be able to switch between Windows and OSX, choosing which applications and OS to use at any given time. "[Scott Byers, vice president for finance and the head of campus IT said] 'We think it will save $150,000 directly, in buying fewer units - even though the Macs cost more per unit than PCs.' The school, which enrolls about 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, will reduce its inventory from nearly 1,700 computers to around 1,450 after the change over. Other costs savings, however, will be harder to measure. 'By standardizing, the IT department should be more productive,' Byers said."

Survey gives more Google phone clues?

Survey gives more Google phone clues?

Yes, this would be pretty easy to fake -- and even if it's real, it's just a survey, which means it's sorta fake by design -- but a questionnaire allegedly received by a Mobileburn forum member hints at specs and a rather fascinating concept design for Google's probably-in-the-works cellphone. Everything seems believable enough, though it seems like they flip-open QWERTY keypad could be a bit tricky to access from the right side thanks to the permanently-affixed nav buttons; features are said to include 3G data, WiFi, and a 2 megapixel camera, not to mention a rather striking Samsung-penned chassis. Typical test-marketing survey mumbo jumbo suggests that the phone would offer "all the exciting Google services from the PC" and -- thanks largely to targeted advertising -- affordable (as it's been suggested) flat-rate data service and a three-month trial. Could it be that Apple's going to see a legitimate competitor in the "pretty, giant-screened cellphone with tight Google integration" market right out of the gate (and with 3G, no less)?

Grindhouse - Trailer 2

Grindhouse - Trailer 2

  Grindhouse - Trailer 2
Grindhouse noun A downtown movie theater - in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the ‘30s and ‘40s - known for “grinding out” non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers favorite exploitation films. Grindhouse will be presented as one full length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Tarantinos film, Death Proof, is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguezs film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in Planet Terror. Welcome to the grind house - itll tear you in two.
Directed by: Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez
Starring: Kurt Russel, Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Josh Brolin

Eric Schmidt says Apple and Google working together on new projects, don't read too much into it

Eric Schmidt says Apple and Google working together on new projects, don't read too much into it

Filed under:

Man, this is one is feeding right into some fanboy's sick fantasy: when asked about at a conference on Monday about a potential Google + Apple tablet device, Google CEO Eric Schmidt did confirm that the two companies are working together on "many more" new projects and left it at that. It's tempting to want to read a lot into that, too bad that "working together" doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. Especially since "working together" could mean anything from the Google Maps app that comes pre-installed on the iPhone (which also happens to be already available for lots of other phones as well) to more deeply integrating Google into Safari, with some sort of hardware device being a longshot. Besides, isn't Google working on a phone of its own?
